ABOUT THE BOOK

214EVER is the visual history of a new era of hip hop in Dallas, Texas. Taken between 2012 and 2014, the photographs in this self-published photobook represent a renaissance of sound and culture–when local artists began to escape the Boogie movement stereotype to combine various sounds and sub-genres of hip hop. They organized warehouse parties and even established their own media outlets and blogs. 214EVER documents artists recording in their bedrooms, to performing at warehouse parties and opening for national acts at larger venues. The photographs published in this book are a glimpse into the struggle and rise of artists, producers, and fans embracing local talent and contributing to a fruitful future for culture in Dallas (a city typically known for less thrilling things).

The introduction is written by Dallasite, Rodney Blu (creator of Burning Bridges podcast), who describes the origins of the creative community within the vast geographic areas of the city. 214EVER is a photographic journey of a city’s young people establishing a vibrant culture within a burgeoning music and arts scene. This book and the history it contains has become even more important today, with the Dallas Fire Department on the relentless quest to shut these DIY events down, preventing the healthy growth of culture in a city that desperately needs it.
